Grandma’s Butterfly Garden Hexiform Quilt 2021–2022

This hand-sewn Grandma’s Butterfly Garden quilt was made by Rachel D’Ambrosio during 2021 and 2022, from a Block of the Month programme supplied by Ashmead Designs. Constructed using Hexiform pieces, the project was particularly enjoyable and straightforward to make, as Suzy at Ashmead Designs pre-cuts all the shapes for the Block of the Month.The quilt features a striking black background, making the brightly coloured butterfly blocks stand out beautifully. It is Rachel’s first and, so far, only quilt made with a black background, and she particularly enjoyed the vivid contrast it created.The quilt was layered with bump wadding and backing fabric before being professionally long-arm quilted. As with several of Rachel’s quilts, the long-arm quilting transformed the finished piece, adding texture and bringing the design fully to life.Measuring 56 inches x 68 inches, it is a colourful and joyful example of contemporary English Paper Piecing.
